Marigold Calendula Officinalis

Calendula is Marigold

Calendula is a flower in the marigold family, also known as Calendula Officinalis.

Common names include, but are not limited to, Calendule (Italian), Scotch Marigold, English Garden Marigold, Fleur de Calendule (French), Pot Marigold.

Calendula is a member of the rather large Asteraceae family, which includes aster, daisy, and sunflower, among the 32,000 other known plants.

How is Calendula different from Marigold?

Pleasant Aroma

Calendula is a marigold, with it’s yellow, orange, cream and deep orange flowers.

It is different than most marigolds, in that is has a very pleasant fruity orange-ish aroma.

Most marigolds have a strong unpleasant oder, which is why they are beloved by gardeners for keeping garden pests away.

Many homeopathic Calendula Creams are actually not that good for you. The company may have had good intentions, but the other ingredients in the cream may be harmful.

Some calendula creams are in poly vinyl gels (PVA). Click this laundry sheets link to read about micro plastics, which are in some of these homeopathic creams.

Some are full of skin irritating acids. Many calendula creams are in bio engineered and or genetically modified carrier oils, such as Canola, corn or soy oils.

There are even calendula creams and lotions that are made with petroleum oil.

Skin Benefits

There are a whole host of benefits of Calendula for skin, such as Winter skin cracks. Click the link below for more information.

Many years ago, a young mother came into my Ithaca Farmers Market booth. She walked right up to me and gave me a BIG hug. She then burst into tears. She was in a breast feeding group of new mothers, when someone said she had a rash on her nipples from breast feeding.

Within a few weeks, other mothers in the group also broke out, in what they found out to be mastitis, a yeast infection in the milk ducts. One of the women bought some of our Calendula Cream for the group members, which they said contributed to clearing up the infection.

This young mother was so grateful that she discovered a simply and natural remedy to gently clear up mastitis.
